A Zapped to the Past Book is coming… with your help!

The Zapped to the Past Podcast in your hands!

After nearly five-and-a-half years, over 1700 Commodore 64 games played and reviewed, with over 250 episodes recorded and 650+ hours of content (which you can find here), we are proud to present the Book of Zapped to the Past!

It was during the pandemic when we had the simple idea to make a podcast where we played all the Commodore 64 games that were reviewed in the main section of Zzap!64 magazine.

“It’ll only take us a couple of years,” we thought.

“There can only be a few hundred at most,” we mused.

And so the Zapped to the Past podcast was born.

Now, as we reach the end of this Herculean, and some might say foolish task, you can join us in this fresh endeavour as we explore the wonderful world of the Commodore 64 and it’s wild and varied library of games.

To commemorate our epic achievement, we are proposing a book covering twenty-five of those games in the same detail we have become known for throughout the podcast.

This is not a book that aims to look at a cherry picked list of games that demonstrate the best on the Commodore 64. Instead, we will look at games that left us wide-eyed, open-mouthed, aghast or just plain dumbstruck.

Including…

  • Games that took brown to a whole new level.
  • Games that moved at seconds-per-frame rather than frames-per-second.
  • Games that depicted their world in full on vector glory.
  • Games that made us nod our heads in appreciation of their game design.
  • Games that wowed us with their amazing sounds and visuals.
  • Games that had us trudge through treacle in an isometric world.
  • Games that made us wait…and wait….and wait…

The book will also feature full colour, original illustrations by artist S.K.Baker, to bring the games to life, highlighting the quirks and details of each individual game. It will also feature a foreword by David Hearne, author or several novels including the classic Escape from the Commodore 64 (which can be found here: http://www.davidhearnewriter.com/ ).

We will also include our infamous ‘Crapverts’ – our glorious and often pointy analysis of the Commodore 64 game adverts and loading screens of the time.

  • Their wilder than wild claims!
  • Their utter misinterpretation of the games!
  • Their lack of anatomical accuracy!
  • Their ability to turn harmless characters into nightmares! Or muppets! Or Worse!
  • Their overuse of lipstick!
  • Their hybrid bulges!

The book will also feature completely original illustration and artwork throughout from the brilliant mind and talents of the one and only S.K Baker.

We don’t want to brag too much – but we’re going to – because this is not only a brilliant scoop for us, but gives the book a completely unique art style too and that is something we are very proud of.

S.K. Baker is an acomplished and published illustrator, graphic designer, artist and creative – and has listened to the podcast from the beginning – right through to the very end. We are understandably thrilled she has agreed to be onboard for this book – it really does ad a whole extra dimension to the project.

If you want to support this project and get yourself a copy of this book then you will need to go to our Kickstarter, register your interest and then pledge when everything is ready.
